The MC goes whiplash from kind of sympathetic to not. The battles often had inconsistencies between them as well. It is like the author had ideas for these big exciting battles and then connected the story after.

My biggest issue with the books is what feels to me to be an inconsistent voice/characterization for the MC. Even when opponents are technically stronger there is often very little doubt in the outcome.

They very much remind me of The Good Guys series with lots of big battles where the MC mostly outmatches their opponents and there is very little doubt in the outcome.
